Hi,

I used to run DA on Centos 5 however a few days ago i moved to Ubuntu 10.04 because it was running better on my server.

I made an admin backup on the old server and after the install i restored the backup. All files/emails seems to be restured succesfully.

However I have some problems:
First problem was an EXIM problem (solved: http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37372)

Now i noticed proftpd won't start:
root@red:~# service proftpd start
Starting proftpd: - Fatal: ScoreboardFile: : unable to use '/var/run/proftpd/proftpd.pid': No such file or directory on line 13 of '/etc/proftpd.conf'
After creating that directory it works fine:
root@red:~# mkdir /var/run/proftpd
root@red:~# service proftpd start
Starting proftpd:
root@red:~#
However when i reboot the server the directory is removed and it won't start untill i create it again.

The next thing is DNS. I noticed my dns isn't updated. If i create a
test A 91.205.xxx.xx
I get an error if i want to ping it:
Ping request could not find host test.domain.nl. Please check the name and try again.

Even after restarting named, apache and the server it still won't ping.
(any 'old' dns-records are working fine)

This is what i found (on boot) in /var/log/messages:

Aug 20 12:18:19 red kernel: [ 7.925472] type=1503 audit(1282299499.199:11): operation="open" pid=780 parent=758 profile="/usr/sbin/named" requested_mask="r::" denied_mask="r::" fsuid=0 ouid=0 name="/usr/local/lib/libz.so.1.2.3"

Does DA run on ubuntu 10.04?
Are CentOS backups somehow incompatible with ubuntu?

Any help is welcome!

Mattie if you want me to look at it (free) mail me at [email protected]). Probably just a few small things have to be changed.

Ubuntu 10.04 is not officially supported if I may believe http://www.directadmin.com/install.html, however it is probably easy to get it working as it is based on Debian.

You should not move from CentOS to something else :D

You should install DA always on a clean OS, then you should not have the problem.

This is because you didn't disable selinux (if I'm correct)

To be sure everything is 100% you should go back to CentOS. Its fully supported by DA. We have many servers running with CentOS and DA without any problems.

Personally I have found that DA runs much faster on Debian and Ubunutu on smaller machines or a VPS. It's the perfect setup.

I just had to throw that in, sorry :p

We don't see changes between Debian+DA and CentOS+DA, its also strange if that should be.

Also it depends on the system setup, we always install CentOS completely clean (no exim, http etc). When the install is done we update it, installing the things thats required and then install DA.

We run multiple servers with DA (starting at a VPS having 2,5GB discspace and 128MB RAM and no SWAP). It works great and we don't maintain any CentOS installation (Debian and Ubuntu are in use). Debian is fully supported by DA (32bit).

@seth: if you want me to have a look at it feel free to email me, tomorrow I've a few hours that I've to wait and can take a look at it.

Would be great, thanks!

Same reason I switched to Ubunutu and same proftp issue.

What was your previous OS? Also Centos?

I changed to Ubuntu because it was running a bit smoother. Could be my fault (lagging programs or so) but i didn't see any problem in moving to Ubuntu.

And ofcource i did a clean-install. I didn't change anything in selinux so that could be the problem.

that's what i was hoping for ;)

The only package i set on install was the SSH-server
