I am redesigning a site with a new look and shopping cart. I need to upload the new shopping cart and test some things on the server before the new look goes live - normally not a big deal.

Since I am secured by SSL though and the site is on its own IP, how can I set up a test site in DirectAdmin and "replace" the old with the new when it's time to go live?

I have to symlink the public and private directories, install the certificate and everything to make sure it is gonna all work right with the new shopping cart....I'm really lost on this one.

Anyone willing to give a lady a hand here?

You don't say if you're a reseller or if it's your own DA system. For the purpose of this discussion I'm presuming it's your own DA server.

I think the best way to do it is to create a new site for experimentation. Don't forget to keep the spiders out until you're ready.

Once you're ready, move everything to the existing site.

It's all my own server :) We have been fortunate enough to move up to 2 dedicated servers of our own now (and even open an office downtown)...

I know how to set up a new site to test on, but I don't know how to test what it would be like for real. In other words, in DA, if I set up a new reseller account and give it a fake URL. Upload my database, files, etc., symlink my public and private directories and all. Then I go in and test everything and it works great...

Then what? How do I get it from there into the real domain name and IP that is live now? You can't rename a reseller account so how would I change that fake domain name or reseller account to the real one without deleting the entire current reseller account and then recreating everything again (i.e. database, symlink, SSL, files, etc.)?

Make sense? I'm sure I'm making it too complicated, but please bare with me :)

Congratulations on your success :) .

Two ways I can think of but I don't have time right now to test or to go into details.

Be careful. Be very careful.

You can set up both domains under one user, and later delete the old domain and rename the new one to the old domain name.

However this could cause you to lose a lot of mail.

You can also use the "mv" command very carefully.

Hmmm, ok. Yeah, I know it's a sticky issue and that's why I thought I'd ask the pros here :)

This is a very busy site and I don't want them to be down much....and surely don't want them to lose email, YIKES!

If anyone cares to elaborate for me, it would be great...
