SpamAssassin only works for users with Unix accounts?

From what I have been able to figure out, SpamAssassin only works for the users that have an underlying Unix account associated with the mail account's username. No place for things like the user preferences, bayes db, etc. to exist if not in that user's home directory.

Is this indeed a limitation? If so, is there any workaround?

Thanks...

I think this is why its settable per domain and not per email account, all the email accounts for the user use the master user's settings and bayes db.
