Hi,

Recently I've been looking into spamassassin. I was wondering, reading the comments in the exim.conf about "RSS - Really Stops Spams" does that mean it wouldn't be necessary to install spamassassin? Does spamassassin offer more options/flexibility? And if Spamassassin is running on my system, do all users have a chance of activating/de-activating it and "white listing" adresses in case some legitimate e-mails are being blocked? Thanks in advance.

Hey,

My opinion is that there is no one product/configuration that will stop spam.

Like system security it should be done in layers and the more layers the better chance you have of reducing anything.

Everybody has their opinion on what to use and why not to use something else.

A lot really depends on things like how much e-mail traffic you expect to see or the number of domains you host, etc..

On DA SpamAssassin is just getting started and they have made a good start. It's there so why not use it. (Oh, sh_t, I probably shouldn't have said that.)

Yes, there is a whitelist list... It can probably be turned off by setting a high spam score but, I think I read somewhere in the forums DA may be putting an on/off option in later (memory is fading so don't quote me on that).

A lot of hosts/sites/etc. use SpamAssassin...

I think it's worth a try... We use it.

I wrote the exim.conf file in question.

And I still use SpamAssassin.

SpamAssassin will catch some emails that our SpamBlocker controls let through, and some will come through both. (On my personal accounts, out of about 400 emails daily, I get about four or five spams that make it through both.)

By default, for new accounts we turn on SpamAssassin, but we leave SpamBlocker (what you call RSS, after the name of the file) off.
