Spamming host mail server

At the weekend one of our admins sent a mass e-mail to our members, as he does every month with the site software he always uses. Now the hosting server company has come back to him and said that his e-mail to the members have been spamming their mail server.

Is this possible and if so how?

You're in the wrong place if you're not a DirectAdmin server user. From your post, it appears you're not.

But I'm going to respond anyway:

Yes, it's possible that your admin spammed them. It's also possible that one or more of your members who received your emails thought they were spam and reported them as such.

The only way you're going to find out is by discussing the issue with your hosting provider. Any other course of action is simply speculation and probably a waste of time.
