we moved a client web hosting account - he used only squirrelmail for his emails, the site had been backed up so we have all the files - abook and folders of previous mail. How does the client restore the old, backed up mail to the squirrel server - dickj54

Squirrelmail uses imap. When you move a backup to a new DirectAdmin server Squirrelmail files should be moved with it.

complicated issue, why it was not done in time for switch-over - we do have the site backed up so we reinstated the .abook files eventually, but we do have the mail back up, can these files be imported or restored to the current server or are they readable by any other programme

sorry if a bit dumb, we don't use webmail, we are designers and this was a hosting favour, we didn't manage content and the client isn't savvy either, our isp isn't very helpful so the client is suffering, and me!

All the mail is accessed directly on the server through imap to the Maildir folders.

If you want all their email then you need to copy /home/<USER>/imap/<DOMAINNAME>/<USER>/Maildir/* to wherever the new server Maildir is located. All this is copied automatically if it is a directadmin backup and restore.

Squirrelmail stores all of its address books and user settings in /var/www/html/squirrelmail/data
