I get (and my list users too) this error from squirrelmail when we try to
login:

Warning: session_write_close(): write failed: No space left on device (28) in /var/www/html/squirrelmail-1.4.6/src/redirect.php on line 168

Warning: session_write_close(): Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in /var/www/html/squirrelmail-1.4.6/src/redirect.php on line 168

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /var/www/html/squirrelmail-1.4.6/src/redirect.php:168) in /var/www/html/squirrelmail-1.4.6/src/redirect.php on line 169

Anyone know what this means?

Means a directory of your harddrive is full probably /tmp

Check to see the drive usage using

df -h

You will have to remove files manually.

Yeah the system admin cleared /tmp and a few other resources
and rebooted. He said majordomo went "haywire" for reasons he
cannot explain. I have noticed for some months time that the
majordomo-owner mailbox gets multiple "delivery failed" notices from
other mail servers, which in the body of the returned mail is a
viagra spam.

I suggested that the admin look for evidence of a spam zombie. Any
one have any other suggestions or ideas?

You shouldn't just send email to a majordomo-owner mailbox; you should forward it to a box you see, and not keep it on the server.

As for those messages; they're generally caused by spam attempts against your list or list subscribe address.
