Hi,

I own a server with one dedicated IP, with lots of users sharing the server. Does this mean none of the users on my server can have SSL enabled because they do not have dedicated IPs?

Is there some method of installing one central SSL so that it applies to all users? Is this even a good idea?

I tried searching the forums first, but being the noob I am , I sometimes couldn't even figure out what information was relevant for what I was looking to find out...

As always, thank you very much for any help.

Cheers,
wookie919.

If a client request to have their own SSL certificates, then you must assign an IP address to their account.

Yes, and the URL will be: https://hostname/~user

The answer is, no.

Okay... and that would naturally lead to my next question which would be... how?

I don't expect a step by step guide of how to install SSL in such a way (although that would be good) but an explanation of the general concept would be very much appreciated...

My current thought goes something along the lines of:
1. SSL can only be installed for a particular IP.
2. I have many users on my server basically sharing one IP.
3. I can install SSL on my server for that one IP.
4. Once I install SSL for that one IP, how can some users use SSL and some don't, when they all share the same IP?

Thanks...

I am sorry; Google or go to the Web site of the company where you purchased your SSL for info on HowTo.

In this case, SSL is available and optional for those who need it. It is not affecting other users who don't want to use this shared SSL certificate.
