Hello, i'm planning to run directadmin on CentOS 4.X 64 bits version. I'm going to use either a Intel Xeon 3.4GHz/EM64T or a dual Intel Xeon 3.0GHz/EM64T with it. Anybody has tried similar or something close to this setup ? if so, do you face any problems such as bugs and errors when using the directadmin? THis is also going to be a commercial server which means i'll be hosting near to 1000 clients on it.

Anybody any suggestions on which OS to go with the CPU ?

Hi genexis,

If you absolutely require a 64-bit OS then our Enterprise/CentOS 4.x version is the only option available at the moment. You won't have any problems with DirectAdmin, but 1000 clients could easily bog down a system if they all host large sites.

Maybe if others are paying attention and have a setup of your speed, they can testify to the speed.

Thanks!

Mark

I am not sure why you need 64 Bit OS but You should have no problem in hosting 1000 accounts on Dual Xeon 3.6 GHZ, 2 MB Cache, 4 GB RAM server.

64 bit Architecture has some limitations as you dont find all rpm's available easily and some might be missing completely for any additional package on your server.

I just want to second that advice, everyone is so quick to jump on the latest and greates of everything. Stick with what you know works.

btw: I manage servers with way more than 1,000 sites with little to no load, many dynamic. It all about how good you are a tweaking your setup for your needs.

its not exactly my choice, but the servers only come in 64 bits processors.

You could install all 32bit OS on it

but install 64bit OS should be better.

There is good and bad things about going with a 64bit OS.

The good:

The 64bit OS will get you a bit better performance under heavy load.

The bad was already pointed out.

The choice is yours.

ahh ... something i never knew. I didn't know centOS 32 bits will run well on a 64bit cpu.

Thanks!

Yeah I just setup a nice beefy server with 2 Opteron 270s and it seemed a pitty to put a 32bit OS on it. In the end I went 32bit as I do not want the headaches of little glitches here and there.

64bit will get there but for me it is not quite ready for the way I use my servers.
