Subdomain pointer

I have problem i would like to do the following:

mail.domein.nl must be routed to the directory :

/public_html/mail

For a customer how do you do this ? create a subdomain and then add a virtual host with apache ?

Be default a subdomain should point to a folder inside public_html.
