I was wondering if the subnet mask has any effect on the operation of the machine or is it there for administrative purpose? If it has operational purpose what is effected by it?

The mask is critical in network management.

It tells the networking subsystem in the kernel which IP#s are on your local network, and which ones must be routed through your gateway to other networks.

(The gateway is set up as part of the server installation.)

Some incorrect subnets may work but cause inefficiencies in you networking, and some will cause networking to fail.

I know.. but the values in DA do not have effect on my network settings. Well the subnet values that is. In other words it is not touching the NIC settings. So I was wondering if it is just there for administrative reasons.

I'd think that (for example) 255.255.255.255 would not work.

If it does, then it's because your network is set up with an overriding netmask.

I know how to do that in RHL and in RHEL, but not in other operating systems.
