Has anyone done a full system backup then restore on a new box? If so can they tell how they did it and how it went?

Matt

I've done it both with reseller backups and with sysbk.

The way we recommend for folk who aren't expert sysadmins, is to first manually create the reseller accounts on the new box, then backup and restore all the resellers.

Then after the resellers are restored and everything is checked, create reseller backups and restore them on the new server.

Two ways advanced administrators can do it are with the new admin-level multi-reseller backup (I've not tried this), and by backing up with sysbk, and restoring manually.

Both methods I've tried worked well for me. Neither were especially fast.

What is involved in restoring manually?

I guess all the accounts I must restore are only under one reseller, admin. No other active resellers. I have a bunch of forward and reverse DNS entries under admin too though I need to move over. I have my DA box do reverse and forward DNS for 4 Class C's. I created them all manually I guess I can move them all manually.

How does the license thing work anyway? I would rather not change the name server IP's if I can get out of it. I guess I must license the new server on one or two new free IP's, install DA, ClamAV and Spamd. In the end I want it all back on the same IP's and to vacate the new ones.

I keep wishing I could just un-tar the sysbak files on new server with fresh DA and wolla. I have well over 1000 email accounts on this server and sysbak breaks 13G easy. Only like 14 domains with one domain with 90 percent of email accounts.

I did this once way back, user backup by user backup. I hated it.

That depends, see below.

I'd definitely do the reseller backup, then. It's going to take some time but I think it should work.

All you need is one new IP# for the new server. Set it up as the master IP#, and get a temporarily license for that server (talk to DA Sales department; you may have to get a one-month rental license for the new IP on the new server).

Then do a reseller backup of all users.

Move the backup to the new server. Restore it there; use the option to use the same IP#s. That'll set up the IP#s on the new server.

Have your datacenter move the IP allocations to the new server.

reinstall the DA license on your new server; it'll then work on the old IP#.

Warning, I've not tested this so you may run into some difficulties, but I do believe it'll work.

A reseller backup should work.
