Thinking of jacking it all in

I have been in this industry since 2006, started up offering friends some webspace free. I didn't really know how to run a server, but I learned as I went on - like all of us, no doubt. Eventually, I taught myself gradually how servers run, networks, etc - I studied Information Technology in 2000 at college, comprising of HTML, visual basic, networking, etc - that kind of stuff.

Not many of you know this, I was born with a physical disability, Cerebral Palsy, after a difficult birth. You can view all about my past and how I got to this stage here (yes, it's an old small WordStress site, ironic eh, considering I detest the thing?!) - the content has not been updated in years, although WordStress is! ;)

I enjoy helping people, that's why I initially opened a little business, so I could help people from my home and earn at the same time - being disabled is hard to get out and about at the best of times. I would've like to own a building for my own servers, or buy my own servers and use colocation buildings - however, yet again, my disability would make this difficult. The next best thing was to rent servers from a company.

This is how I run my business, renting servers and running them via my bedroom... My client base is small, I do not advertise, do any SEO or marketing. My site and details are floating around the web, and if someone buys from me, great.

Going by the title of this thread, yes, I'm thinking of jacking it all in soon - that is give up and close it in layman terms. Like most of us, 2020 has been a cluster *beep* with businesses going into administration, even I have unpaid invoices from clients.

I'm not feeling too good in general, so I've not been doing anything at all, well, I don't feel like doing anything (even for money!)..... I'm not enjoying it as I used to.... That, and unpaid invoices, gets you down - even before COVID... I hardly make a profit these days anyway.

I'm good at PHP, C++, so I might continue and build on Pickles Software, code software, maybe games as well.

Keep safe.

Peter take care if doing something else make more happy go for it.

But keep in mind mostly after bad times comes good times. ;)

This sounds for me as dejavu for something that doctors find and how long to live (partner) i am happy that doctors could be wrong in their conclusions. when saying you only have to live... (y)
And to think that when Peter was born, the doctors only gave him a few hours to live. Whoever said that doctors know everything, should re-think!
Keep it all UP

Take a look if you like doing things with PHP to the Laravel framework and guys. (small TIP)
OYEA HAPPY NEW YEAR be patient it comes for you to i think.

I'm fully understanding what you're saying here, as this is the exact same reason I have a little business, however I'm not disabled but not fit for work anymore for almost 20 years.
As you I also don't do advertising and have a small clientele, but got the advantage I don't have to live from it. I'm also lucky untill this point, all invoices are paid, some a bit late, but they get paid.

But you do have to keep some joy in your work. However, I'm with ikkeben on this, it can all change in short time to good times, one never knows.
You might want to consider to keep it a little bit going and start the things which make you happy more.

In any case, if you indeed choose to stop, still a happy New Year from me and good luck and joy with the things you will proceed on now.
Keep your chin up! Be well and stay safe!

Hope to see you soon again, if not here, then maybe somewhere else!

Peter,
Thanks for telling us about yourself proves the human spirit can triumph over anything. Everything happens for a reason sometime we don't know or understand why only God does. I think you have to do what makes you happy in life. Whatever that is only you know. Just be sure that whatever that thing is it is what you do. Whether a company or not isn't important it's the Happiness part. I am sure whatever you choose to do will be the best for you. I hope for you only the best and good health. Whether or not you 'pack' it all in (US version) you are always welcome here to help us and talk about wordpress being your favorite thing...

2020 was a hell of a year indeed...

Stay well Peter, all the best wishes from Belgium.

So yeah, I've made the decision to close my business on 2nd February 2022...... It wasn't something on a whim, it was carefully thought out.... I'm just not enjoying it any more (reasons in my OP).......

I will still check in this forum from time to time....

Hey Peter, sorry to hear about your challenges and decision to stop your business.
I agree, the past two years have been crazy everywhere.
Good luck and let us know what your new plans are.
