First, let me state that I have read the other threads requesting support for Ubuntu, but I am going to post here anyway.

Also, let me say that I was a devout Debian user from 1999 ( when I abandoned Slackware ) until 2005 when I switched to Ubuntu on the desktop, and later on the server.

Here are a few things Ubuntu has going for it:

- Cutting ( although not bleeding ) edge software
- Consistent, rapid release cycle
- Based on Debian
- Strong community.
- "Long Term Support" releases
- Commercial support

I could go on, but that's not really necessary. The first three in the list are the main reasons why I now prefer Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is focused more on the desktop than the server.
Yes, it is a nice distro ... but there isn't the support/usage for it as yet.
It also isn't well tuned for a server environment.

Run a dedicated server distro... such as Debian (if your *.deb/apt inclined).

Being based on Debian, you're likely to utilise much of the information available for Debian.

Failing that.. use CentOS as it's widely supported within DirectAdmin.

Ubuntu actually releases a "Server" release now, and has for some time.

However, I spoke with Mark of DirectAdmin in email concerning Ubuntu support, and I am generally satisfied that the Debian port should work with Ubuntu as well.

I have been running CentOS w/ Ensim for some time ( I inherited a Fedora Core 1 / Ensim environment a few years ago and migrated to CentOS ), and I have been dying to migrate to a Debian-based solution ever since. Now, with the acquisition of Ensim by Parallels, I am looking for a control panel that will run on Ubuntu.

One of the main reasons I am so set on Ubuntu is that, on the application development side, we have recently embraced Ruby on Rails as our development framework and require the current stable version of ruby and other software - and after being with CentOS for so long, I am *really* tired of spending time on rolling and maintaining custom software packages.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Good luck with that. The Parallels Ensim Pro FAQ seems to make it clear to me what I've read elsewhere; that Parallels is much more interested in the client base than in the software itself.

For what it's worth, see the thread I started about Parallels purchasing ModernBill, here.

Also note that All current versions of Ensim require a RedHat based distribution. All current versions of Plesk require a RedHat based distribution and have for years.

You're getting more flexibility with DirectAdmin than you do with most other control panels. I wouldn't hold my breath.

That all said, since Mark has said the Debian build should work with Ubuntu, why would you expect the company to support yet another distribution?

Jeff
