Have anyone successfully gotten directadmin to work on Ubuntu?

DirectAdmin: Are you planning to have the Debian version support Ubuntu as well?

Ubuntu is developed and maintained as a desktop release. It includes lots of packages I wouldn't want on a server, and doesn't include a lot of packages I would want on a server.

Can you explain what important reasons exist for adding another release to the support tree, especially considering one based on another that's already supported.

Thanks.

Jeff

One could say the same about Fedora, but in any regard, without all of the workstations elements Ubuntu is basically an updated Debian. I'm not necessarily suggesting adding Ubuntu to the dev tree, just trying to see if anyone has Direct Admin working on it. For all we know, the Debian release of DA may work fully on Ubuntu. I'd actually like to see courier-imap and maildir support way before any other distro's are added.

One could, but one would be wrong. Fedora is maintained as an allpurpose distribution. And in any event if you've followed my posts you already know I don't believe in using Fedora as a hosting server distribution, because of the speed at which support for updates stops.

According to an Ubuntu presentation I went to yesterday, it's fairly much Debian Unstable, but the presenter told us she had some problems with changing the apt repositories to work properly. Or perhaps I'm confusing that with what she said about Kubuntu. I'll try to remember to ask her.

My concerns would be with whether or not Ubuntu uses different filenames which DA would have to learn to live with.

It may; I believe that to get the RHEL versions of DA to work on WBEL and on CentOS all that was required was to have DA expect a different contents in one file.

As would I :) .

Ubuntu is not really designed for server use. Remember, in a server environment, you are looking for stability, not constant updates which may break things.

Thats why I dont like Fedora either. Its good as a desktop/testbed, but as a server it sucks, since releases are made so fast.

I'm on the Fedoralegacy.org board/list, and already support for all the incoming Fedora releases is overwhelming them. They already had to drop support for Redhat 7.2 and RedHat 8 as it was too much work, and it is hard enough keeping RedHat 9 and 7.3 in sync, they really dont want to have to do anything more especially with the constant barage of Fedora releases. It would be a nightmare to support them all with security patches and updates.

Ubuntu does have an actual server release now. It has it's own update release schedule aside from the desktop Ubuntu. With the momentum and popularity Ubuntu currently has I think it would be worth a look.

Ubuntu is basically a more updated Debian so my guess is that Directadmin would work on it fine. I haven't tried it out yet but maybe I'll setup a box and report back here.

That would be awesome! I use Ubuntu for my main OS at work and also at home. The install is so clean by default, I would love to run the server version with DirectAdmin.

I have just bought a directadmin lisence.

However Im using ubuntu I hope this wont be a problem.

I find ubuntu server is a very good indeed and beats other server systems.

Will it work on ubuntu? :S

and when will my lisence get activated!

Just an update on my other post, ubuntu works fine with directadmin but it needed 1 thing changed for it to work.

and the ubuntu server release seems stable to me.

I dont remember the changes, I did it a while back. But I emailed support and they got it working for me.

I used OS Debian as it is Debian Just better

I have just succesfully installed DirectAdmin on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server. The installation of DirectAdmin used Debian 3.1 packages. There were only a few very minor things that needed done.

First of all, Ubuntu (Server) is installed as barebones. Once a base install is complete, you need to run "apt-get install build-essential" to install all of the compiler tools that DirectAdmin will need to use during the installation.

The second thing is that Ubuntu handles sshd a little different than DirectAdmin expects. DirectAdmin can see the process as eithe running or not running, but it is not able to control the process. For sshd to work at all, you need to run "apt-get install ssh". Just keep in mind that DirectAdmin can tell you whether its running or not but it won't be able to start or stop the process.

Other than that, it runs absolutely flawless on my Ubuntu box.

I just figured I'd let you know :)
