Hi everybody.

I'm not a clever person when it comes to server installation/acces/direct admin. I can get around the server but i'm not up on the technicalities of what and how it works.

I have a problem that i can't as yet seem to reslove.

I have direct admin on my package and it works well for me although if im honest i leave most of it alone.

I also have on part of my domain an smf forum. No problem with that, it's been working for about 18months now with no real problems, occasionally it plays up (usually when you people update the licence file actually) but all in all it's good.

But, a few days ago i had an eamil via the smf forum that is hosted telling me that there had been a database problem. By the time i had logged on and had a peek was about 8 hours later and the thing had rebooted itself.

The problem since that crash is that whatever caused the crash must have also not been quite corrected because now the entire site is slow right up to the access of my server/da panel.

The forum is incredibly slow, somtimes timing out when trying to access it, so much so i've put the thing into maintenance mode.

Can anybody answer me a few questions.

If the smf forum database was playing up then fine but it wouldn't/shouldn't affect my ability to log into my server package should it? The forum is on a subdirectory of my main domain but i can't even access my front page sometimes. and as stated I can't even log in to my server package.

I've contacted my hosts, they told me there was nothing wrong but quite obviously there is and i've since raised a ticket with them about 24hrs ago and they haven't even responded to that.

Any ideas people? It really is becoming a problem and right now my forum is offline and members have left in droves.

Tell me what error logs to find and once i get on the server i'll copy them and post there here.

Right now i'm a little peeved to say the least.

My hosts are US orientated and I'm in the UK.

Are you sure its a problem on the server and not a connection problem? Have you tried a traceroute?

No, it should't.

That's not related to MySQL at all, though it could be related to runaway MySQL processes. However if you've restarted MySQL that should solve any problem that runaway MySQL processes would create. However, if you haven't already, you might want to try rebooting the server, in case there are some stuck processes you're not otherwise removing.

I don't think posting error logs is going to solve the probem.

Post the output of:

# top

However, I'd guess that the first place to look would be to see if the server's been hacked. An active hack could have caused the first problem, and everything else you mention could stem from that.
