Unable to start proftpd; check logs for more details???

First off, i never enabled proftpd when setting up this server. It was pure by default.

Im seeing these in my message logs;

Check the ServerType directive to ensure you are configured correctly.
Unable to start proftpd; check logs for more details

So, why am i getting these messages?

proftpd is not running.
chkconfig --list shows proftpd off x 6

pure is running so whats up with this?

Need to remove proftpd for good.

Is proftpd in yum? If so, do you have auto updating turned on?
