Unusual SSH error

Trying to login to one of our servers, I get a warning message when logging in from MY computer to it directly:

buffer_get: trying to get more bytes 4 than in buffer 0

If I come in through another server, it's fine - no problems at all.

This just started - nothing changed that I know of (honest) on either side, and the /var/log/secure log doesn't even show the attempt, therefore no error.

This is centOS -> centOS

any ideas what generates this error, or how it could be resolved?

Yes, the key has worked fine for ages - I tried removing / re-adding, no change.

Key works fine on all the other servers
