Upgrade Spam Assassin/rules/etc... ?

I'm using version 3.1.4 and it has been working great in the past. Some spam would always slip through however. More recently it seems I've been getting more spam. I changed the threshold to make it more sensitive but however a good bit is still getting through. Do I need to upgrade SA or just get more rules or something else? I read up on some things and it looks like you can use a utility against a spam box to "learn" the spam and block it. Anyone familiar with this?
 
Does upgrading provide new rules or what exactly makes it better at the filter when upgrading? Also I ran the spam script before that downloads SA from the DA site. Is it recommended to not use that script anymore and manually do it?
 
you will have new/updated rules & filters

to learn spam you have to run the sa-learn script, but you have included in spamassassin an autolearning feature.
Have a look on sa handbook.
 
I have upgraded but am still getting a good bit of spam arriving in my inbox. I have a custom threshold of 2.0 set. Any tips to block it?
