I have a Directadmin server running on CentOS 4.x 32 bit with a single SATA drive. I want to move it too CentOS 5.x 64 bit with software RAID 1 install. I have about 15 domains and 2000 email accounts. I want to use the same IP's etc. Has anyone done this before and know the easiest way to go? Perhaps I am best moving to a couple new IP's or something?

Matt

Neither I nor the people who work on CentOS recommend in-place version upgrade. I recommend building a new server, and moving the data.

I agree but would like to do it in the middle of the night and have it on the same IP's.

Jeff, I beg to differ :) We upgraded many "Web" production servers from CentOS v4.x to v5.4 (i386 and x86_64)without any problems. It takes good planning, preparation, time before attempting the upgrade, and a very good background knowledge of Linux system.

The other option, as Jeff said, is to format your HD and move your date.

Do you disagree that I recommend you don't do it? I don't see how you can say that. Or do you disagree that the CentOS developers don't recommend it? If you can find where the CentOS people recommend it please send us a link to something.

Or do mean simply that you get away with doing it? I'd bet the latter. Sure, but you write:

So how about being a nice guy and giving us some insite to all of that. Otherwise you're just bragging that you can do it.

I can do it. I know how to do it. I chose not to, because I'm aware of the problems. I still recommend that no one do it, and I still believe that the CentOS developers make the same recommendation.

Please post in more detail.

Thanks!

Jeff

Jeff,

sorry for the mis-communication. You can certainly upgrade CentOS from version 4 to version 5 by reformatting the harddrive. It is also possilble to upgrade CentOS from v4 to v5 without formatting the harddrirve and starting from stratch.

Sure, but you write that it takes planning and preparation but don't give any hint as to what has to be planned or what kind of preparation is required, which means that if someone takes your advice and hasn't done whatever it is that you say is required, they're going to fail.

Unless you tell us specifically what you plan and what you prepare, so it'll work, aren't you just leading users down a dangerous path?

Jeff
