Use 2 Personal Licenses for DNS Cluster. Do I need any other license?

Hi,

Want to create a redundant DNS solution with DirectAdmin and read that the Personal license is adequate for it, since it allows unlimited domains if its used just for DNS purposes.

So, my idea is to buy 2 servers located in different datacenters, but before I have one question about the license when its used only for DNS purposes:

With cPanel DNSOnly license there is the need to have 1 primary cPanel server with a “full and complete license” and then the DNSOnly license can be used on the Secondary DNS server just for sync purposes.

Is it equal with DirectAdmin? Or with DirectAdmin I can build a (independent) DNS cluster using just 2 Personal Licenses (one for Primary DNS and the other for the Secondary DNS)?

Thanks!

How would you want to make use of the multi-server setup for DNS if you don't have a full DA license? So how to connecto to DA?

I can't say for sure if what you think (independent clustering) is possible, but the $24 a year personal licenses are only available until August 1st. After that they won't sell them anymore, only the personal plus.
As long as you pay for the personal license it will keep running and existing. But since this is only a couple of days, you might have an answer faster if you mail to the sales @ directadmin.com e-mail address.

On the other hand... it's weekend so not sure if you will have an answer in time because of that either. I would at least take 1 license or take 2, you can always cancel and get your money back if it's not possible, but at least you have the licenses then in time if it is possible.

Hi @Richard G

Thanks for the response and information. Below some more explanation of what I’m looking for:

I do not host websites or email on servers with DirectAdmin. My objective is to create a Redundant DNS Cluster with DirecAdmin, to where my clients can point their domains nameservers and then manage their DNS on the Cluster.

DirectAdmin cluster will only be used for DNS Hosting. Each client, must have its own individual account on DirectAdmin to login and manage its own DNS.

Can anyone clarify me on this? Thanks

The Personal license is unlimited-domain for DNS clustering purposes -- so if DNS is your only need, then you don't need a higher license. (y)

Hi @DirectAdmin Sales

Thanks for the information!

So just to make it clear so I will go ahead and buy the needed licenses:

You said and I quote: “so if DNS is your only need, then you don't need a higher license”

About this two questions:

1- I need DNS and also the ability to create unlimited individual DirectAdmin domains and accounts for each of my clients (users), so they can login and manage their own domain DNS records.

2- I do not currently use DirectAdmin. This will be to build an independent DNS cluster. So, besides the 2 Personal Licenses for the DNS Cluster, I do not need to have any other license or server running DirectAdmin, correct? This must act as an independant and stand-alone DNS cluster.

Thanks!

It sounds like the Personal license might not be suitable for you then. It only has 1 account (the default "admin" login). You cannot create more accounts and have users/clients login to a Personal license.

When we say unlimited domains for DNS purposes, we mean DirectAdmin's own DNS clustering feature. DirectAdmin server <---> DirectAdmin server <--> DirectAdmin server. More information here:

Hello. We did similar functionality. With the current licensing system, you need one Standard license which will include an unlimited number of users and manage their records, and one Personal license which will be used only for clustering.
