Solved User level generated backups

I noticed that a few backups I generated today contain a single file, is that how it's supposed to be now?
Comparing with other backups from a year ago I can see the whole user directory inside the tarballs.
I just want to make sure they were generated correctly and that I will be able to restore those sites in case I need it.

Not really sure how this is packed but trying to unpack it the usual way gives me an error

$tar xzvf file.tgz
tar: This does not look like a tar archive

I needed to do gzip -d and then untar it, then I was able to see the directory tree.
