Hi, I would know if I can use the ./build script to install a great apache on my server and so I can update php & apache easy with this script but without installing Direct Admin on my server.

Any suggestion? Possible? is it a good idea?

If you have a license it is most likely possible.

How about emailing DirectAdmin and asking them ;)
Get the picture?

It's an interesting question.
I've been able to do it without an additional license (I already OWN multiple licenses for other servers) on an test server, when I actually had time to play around a bit.

But no, I'm not going to say how I did it. DA is the cheapest commercial control panel out there, so c'mon...

You should ask DA...

So basically you are asking if you can steal the build script made by DA and use it elsewhere?

Um no, I don't think that's what he asked at all. If I read the question correctly he is asking for permission to use it. Big difference between that and what you are accusing him of. It's not stealing if he has permission.

FWIW, I am guilty of stealing it. (Your word, I don't actually consider it stealing even though I don't have explicit permission) I've used build to install Apache/PHP on 3-4 servers because it builds PHP exactly the way I want it built.

My advice to the original poster is if you are using the same OS (CentOS, etc) on your DA box as the one you are trying to use the script on then technically is should be ok. (I'm not giving permission here, I'm just commenting on the feasibility)

I usually edit it a bit (AFTER I do a build update) to get rid of FP. Other than that it's a handy little utility. Oh and on Cent, make sure you modify your yum.conf to exclude yum from overwriting your changes.

IMHO, etc.

The problem of course is that it copies files from their system and uses software they've written.

I don't know why anyone would post the question here rather than just send an email to DA sales and see what they say.

Although there is no official policy on this, common sense dictates such scripts should only be used on DA servers. People have been very good about this, and we don't mind the odd customer using build scripts to setup their other (non-DA) servers.

If it becomes a problem, we will simply integrate the licensing database into the build scripts (like the setup.sh script) so it cannot be abused. In the meantime, thanks (so far) to everyone using it responsibly.

Jeff,

I didn't realize it used software they wrote. My apologies to all. I will cease my practice.

In some cases it might be usefull that it's possible to rebuild an install from a production server. Let's say i want to test something first, before changing it on a production server.

i could simply install the apache that DA uses in for example vmware. Make the changes and see if they all work out as they should. And if everything goes well, i could then do the same changes on the production server. This way, downtime will be reduced and you don't have to buy a license for a testserver

Just check the post from DA Sales, above, and let's all act accordingly.

:)
