If I'm understanding correctly, will setting up multi-server allow me to create a multiple dns server setup so in case one goes down the next one can take over?
Also, how many domains can one dns server typically handle? What is a reasonable amount figure?

Most people use 2 only. Some people use 4. Each registrar has a limit how many in total you can have though.

Thanks for your reply but, i don't think you read my question correctly.

I was asking, can we use that multi-server feauture in directadmin to perform multi-dns server setup?

Out of the box, DA takes care of the DNS/Web/Mysql all in one server, not letting you host your DNS elsewhere. So how would I go about having multiple separate nameservers with DA? Surely there is a built-in feature to this somewhere?

And I was asking what is a reasonable number of domains per name server, not name servers.

Yes, but both servers must be running DirectAdmin.

That's exactly what multi-server does. If you don't want your second nameserver to need to run DirectAdmin then search these forums for Master2Slave.

We run somewhere in the neighborhood of 8,000 domains. Some public severs probably run tens of thousands.

The limitation is how long BIND takes to reload/restart, and that depends on your hardware.
