Dear All

im having a serious problem...

i have a new client hosting with me and has about 150 users setup on DA.

for the first 2 days it was fine... now since yesterday the vm-pop3d service is hanging (meaning Outlook cannot download the mail). i checked with my hosting provider where i got the dedicate dserver and they couldnt find anything wrong..

when i try to restart the service.. it takes a long time to stop and then doesnt restart. then after a While DA automatically restarts it .

Initially i thought it was a memory problem , so i upgrading my server memory... the problem ceased off for about 4-7 hours and then now its back...

i dont know why its happening.. I checked this forums for so many things like increasing the instances in xinetd.conf and xinetd.d from 60 to 250 and restarting the xinetd

BUt the problem still happens in the DA - Queue task log , i see this

i dont know what to do .... and my customer keeps complaining.. im not an expert linux user ... but know some commands on shell, and to work as an average user.

some please help

I can't tell anything as a certainty without logging on to your server (and I charge a lot for that), but my first guess is that there are a lot of POP3d processes running, perhaps too much. You need to look at your system resource usage when this happens. You may need more memory, or a faster processor, or just to simply tweak some settings.

I have the exact same problem sometimes. My users then workaround by using webmail.

I link it to heavy spam runs against my servers. Every time i see spikes in exim , spamd, perl and mail logfiles, vm-pop3d hangs , when the spam run ends vm-pop3d is up and running again.

Very weird , from my searches it has something to do with child processes the, appearantly crappy, vm-pop3d can't handle ;-)

The only working suggestion to this seems to be upgrading to dovecot.
