Webmin (or shell) for DNS conflict with DirectAdmin?

I have another post in the forum asking how to run DirectAdmin managed DNS as a slave. Not getting any responses --maybe because it's dealt with other places. But I can't find clear answers elsewhere. I'm confused about the answers in google about DirectAdmin and multiple DNS servers. It looked like there was a tool at one time for this, but I can't find it in the 3rd party area.

I see a product called clonepanel that seems to be trying to address the issue:
http://clonepanel.com/category/about/

I see an instruction on how to manage slaves with Webmin, and I know some people run DirectAdmin and Webmin together. Here's Webmin/DNS slave explanation here:
http://www.beer.org.uk/bsacdns/

My question, does DirectAdmin pick up on DNS changes made via the shell (or Webmin)? So, if I configured slaves via Webmin's interface, would DirectAdmin reflect this?

Any other options for managing multiple DNS servers while hosting with DirectAdmin?

(My domain servers are with DNSmadeeasy.)

Bruce

If you have 2 or more DA servers you can use your own servers for DNS.

Use the multi-Server option in DA to allow DNS records to be swapped out between the servers.

Point ns1.xxxxx.com to your first server and
point ns2.xxxxx.com to your second server.

regenerate the zone files from the commandline to update / distribute all files and it should work. This way you keep management of the DNS in DA and have 2 seperate servers managing DNS.

Another alternative is a set of scripts called master2slave by jlasman.

Bruce, I may have just responded to your thread; it sounds familiar.

I wish I could understand what ClonePanel is from the website; to me it's nothing if not obtuse.

To answer your question, a bunch of years ago DA staff said that DirectAdmin was incompatible with Webmin. But some of us (not me, though) use it succesfully.

It should manage DNS in a way that's fully compatible with DirectAdmin as long as you don't do anything drastic, like remove BIND entirely ;).

But since your post appears to be about setting up DA's BIND installation to be a slave nameserver and you've pointed us to a page about using Webmin to set up master zones, I'm unsure of your point.

I answered your specific question in the other thread.

Onno,

What Bruce wants to do is run his master DNS elewhere, and turn DA into a slave nameserver. At least that's what I understand from his other post.

Thanks Jeff,

I think I got confused in my point too. I'm choosing whether to use DA to manage my zones and have dnsmadeeasy to slaves, or to use DNSmadeeasy as the master.

As I think about it, if I have DNS on various servers and various hosts, which I do, I think having my masters all at DNSmadeeasy is the most logical. So, I'll use DA as a slave.

But, I was curious whether DA can set itself up to replicate to slaves, as some on my VPS may want to do this --is this done merely by creating the ns records in DA?

Bruce

As I just wrote in your other thread, I'd use two separate servers (doesn't DNSMadeEasy offer you that?) as slaves, and the DA server as the hidden master.

DA has it's own DNS replication system; it's called Multi Server Option and it replicates master zones, if I recall properly.

If you want to slave on your own slave server and not run DA on it you can use my Master2Slave DNS Replicator; I wrote it, and I use it. Search for it here on these forums.

I think I'll follow your advice in my other post, and go for having my one (only) DA server (VPS) be hidden master for the zones on that server, and then have dnsmadeeasy be in slave mode as to those zones.

I've downloaded the master2slave software and will give it a try. I'm not too saavy on BIND, so we'll see how it goes. :)

Bruce

Master2Slave isn't going to work for you unless you can get the folks at DNSMadeEasy to use it as well :) .

They must have their own facility for you to add zones to their slave system; you'll probably have to use that.
