What are the must have's for server hardening?

I'm new to the dedicated server game but i'm learning as fast as I can, now i'm to the point of trying to really make the server secure. So far i've got mod_security rolling, but thats about it, what other programs/services/techniques are the fundamental server hardening things to do on a Linux based server ?
