Hi,
i was wonderring what OS would you preffer for DA ?
Server: HP DL 380 G5
currently i have ubuntu=debian and have a lot of issues downgradeing PHP :)
So... if i should install clean OS what should it be to maximaze the performance of 64 bit processors ?

CentOS runs so well. I'm using CentOS for the last 5 years.
Before I used Debian.

Tough call. I like that Fedora Core includes multiple window managers (I prefer KDE to Gnome). Still, Ubuntu seems to be doing better at package management for software installs, which is nice, and there are more packages available for Ubuntu. I suppose it depends upon what's more important to you - try to find something that's critical and see if one or the other is better at it.

KDE?Gnome? Whaaat? In a Server enrvironment less you install better you go actually...

I dont know how other sysadmin does work, but i do not use any graphical interface at all, SSH is the way.

DA is mainly written on CentOS System and then ported to other OS, so, CentOS is the logical better choise since it does work "for sure" cause its the main OS used to compile it.

Also, packages, well, RedHat/CentOS does have a very nice repository, adding then epel and repoforge give you almost everything you need... without talk about compile software directly from source...

To Andrea's good points I add a few more...

DirectAdmin builds it's own hosting stack, mostly by compiling, and sometimes from it's own packages, so the amount of packages in the manager isn't as critical.

Yum has the 'exclude' directive; a lot easier to keep track of what you've excluded then when using apt-get from Debian packages/Ubuntu.

Fedora has too short a lifetime to be easy to maintain in a server environment. The fast development pace means stability is much harder to maintain. Even Fedora developers will tell you it's not designed for use in a Server Environment.
