Greetings,

I always visit the "version updates" forum and have been trying to figure a few things out.

when items are posted about being updated, are we to update them ourselves (example: MySQL 4.0.18) or is this something that gets updated when DA panel does an update? how do we know if an update item is going to be included in a DA update or not?

Currently, the items of interest are:
ProFTPD
MySQL
phpMyAdmin

Should we go ahead and upgrade or wait for DA if they are going to add these into their update....hmmm, I wonder if I even understand the update process???

These you have to update yourself. You can wait and hope DA updates them, but I would just update them yourself.

Normaly there is a good explanation how to update it in the thread.

this brings up my next question...
let's say we update something and then DA decides to add the update to the DA update process. will this interfere with any kind of settings we may have to do? for example, let's say a file needs to have a special entry or there is a difference in location of install....these do not present any problems?

it would be nice to know definitively what items are DA updated and what are not. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? So, for me it is safer to wait for DA install to ensure it works properly...

it is never my intent to be a thorn in any person's or company's side but there is a big difference between "thinking" and "knowing".
my question are asked because i am still a novice...learning on the way. imo, it seems that we should "know" what is going to be included in the updates and what is not.
with time being such a premium these days, it does not seem wise to duplicate efforts (at my skill level that often causes things to go wrong) when there are skilled people already working on good solutions so we can all be successful :)

Well I, and probaly more people don't know when DA is going to update these packages and my server packages where never updated by DA so I "guess" this would not be changed in the meanwhile. So if you want outdated packages wich aren't critical then there's no problem. But if there's a bug in phpMyAdmin wich could cause problems on your server then just update the package.

So it's all up to you. If you want a solid answer about the control panel and it's updates ask DirectAdmin.

I'm updating when there are lots of bugs or security leaks

it is never my intent to be a thorn in...
Just a thought. Could I also suggest that you respect someone (I'm not suggesting you did any different) when they say they 'think' instead of they 'know'. In all the tech forums I visit, there are far too many people who claim to 'know' when they don't. Someone who says they 'think' is likely to be accurate in their answers and are liable to prompt more specific replies if they aren't entirely right.

hi mike_p,

you are correct...i should never point a finger and it was my utmost intent to not point any fingers with the comment in reference to "thinking" and "knowing". it was meant to be a generalized statement than a pointed character observation.

getting on in years and still have not figured out how to be 'politically correct' in life. there was a hope that DA would step in and give us the details i think many of us are looking for...but i also have to remember how forums work...
from what i can tell, fusionictnl is a knowledgable individual. His post among others are ones i pay attention to because they are usually posting good stuff us less edumacated ones can use. in the future i will be sure to 'think' :) about what is typed before posting.
thanks for the comments...
