where is my.cnf ? (mysql configuration file)

Dear All expert,

I have few question about configure my mysql

1. Do you know where is the my.cnf file comes from the mysql

2. i see the number of connection ( in variable list of mysq) is too high ( more than 500), is that normal ?

3. some of my client always showing "too many connection", what's the problem comes from ? how to fix it ?

1) /etc/my.cnf - there isn't one by default.
