FrontPage Extensions

Hello,

when I want to enable the Frontpage extensions it says:
Error setting up your web:
Error: Cannot open "srm.conf": no such file or folder.

Should I tell my hosting company or can I fix this myself, and how?

You should stop using them since Microsoft doesn't support them anymore.

But, if one has customers that use them?

Are there extensions required/available for the replacement for FrontPage?
 
Most things that people do on the web do not require FP extensions. FP has ftp built in to it and that is what should be used from now on. Most of the time people are only using the extensions for publishing.

You don't have to use a separate program. You just have to learn to use the other publishing options available in FP.

Yep...that's one way to look at it....except for the folks that have actually used the extensions.

I think some of those functions would have to be replaced by php and/or cgi applications, and there may be FrontPage users who don't have the interest/skills to do that. One could make the case that there might ber a requirement for those extensions.

Do we know if the replacement for FrontPage requires extensions?

What do you think is an alternative for folks to use to create their web pages and upload them? I give folks a combination of Komposer and a few templates...that seems to work for a large number of people...although I feel like a fish out of water if a MAC user has questions or needs help.

Like it or not the extensions are indeed going away and people can either learn to deal with it now while they have time to slowly learn or be forced to deal with it in an emergency situation when their host finally deletes the extensions. Eventually people are going to suddenly find that their forms and whatever else their web site does that use the extensions will suddenly not work and they will not be able to use the excuse that they didn't know or were given no warning. Microsoft announced it in June 2006 that the extensions were going away.

My answer to the OP was to not use the extensions for this reason. So yes I didn't really answer his question. To answer his question, if he has root access he may be able to fix it himself but if he does not he will have to get his host to do it.
