I installed awstats with custombuild (and disabled webalizer) but I see no stats in the control panel under the "Site Summary / Statistics / Logs" area. I just installed it, so maybe it takes 24 hours to actually run stats?

Whats strange is that if i click on the domain name i goto the View Statistic Reports and nothing is there (not even a blank template).

Is this normal behavior and I just need to be patient and wait 24 hours for something to run?

Alternatively I see an option "Make statistics publicly viewable", I definitely dont want to publish my stats to the broader world, but i'm wondering if publicly available means available to us admins and the term is misleading and that I should turn this on to actually see anything?

reading the DA configuration guide it mensions that conf files should be in home/admin/domains/website.com/awstats however no such directory has been created...

Yes if I'm correct the stats are done on the nightly tally.

If you want to see results now you could use this line as root via SSH:
echo 'action=tally&value=all' >> /usr/local/directadmin/data/task.queue
Then wait until the task is ready and then result should be viewable.
