61 Can't open SMTP stream

ERROR:
Message not sent. Server replied:

    Connection refused
    61 Can't open SMTP stream.

Is the message that I get when I try to send mail via Squirrel mail. Forwarding mail is also not working. I backed up the site, deleted the account and made a new account and reloaded the site, still the same problems with email.

Any ideas?

Check your squirrelmail settings to see what you have set as the smtp host. If it is set to localhost make sure that no firewall is blocking port 25.

This could mean that port 25 is somehow being blocked at localhost. Can you get email from the outside world?
