Hello,

An Internet company Rambler filled a copyright claim to Igor Sysoev (the author of the open-source web-server) regarding the web-server Nginx.

Nginx office has been under a police raid today. Igor Sysoev and Maxim Konovalov are allegedly detained on nginx case.

Nginx is an open source web-server used by many sites and is actively supported by DirectAdmin, see the link https://nginx.org/ for more information.

We are users and admins of the web-server Nginx, and it is hard to say yet how the things will go. If Rambler wins, it might bring an end to Nginx at all.

Yes, the "Nginx, inc" has been sold half an year ago for $670 millions USD to an american company "F5 Networks", see https://www.f5.com/products/nginx

And now Rambler wants to get it all. The Nginx's author Igor Sysoev used to work as a system administrator for Rambler in early days when he started to write Nginx in his spare time. And they believe they own Nginx in this case.

Problem is "spare" time if using resources ( software / hardware / connections / advice from collegae's and more..) from Rambler when programming / testing in his own spare time ...

Are very tricky points "patenting and owning" code.......... and also different LAWS in different Country's so lets hope in His country it is better / or was better.

Most working / employe contracts are a kind of "JAIL." :cry:

Then extra the power of people, organizations , politics , governments, can hurt some to , all for the money and power. ( as the smell off it ..)

Not in our country afaik ? or am i mistaken? (presuming and i am pretty sure you are, dutch.)

Seems like they figured out they could charge money for it. Like I assume F5 will do. Also if they do someone will just fork it and call it MOtrx

Yups, most (ICT) working contracts in The Netherlands state that anything developed in spare time belongs to the employer. Some restrictions do apply, e.g. is you're a softwaredeveloper and you developer software in your spare time, it belongs to the employer because it's his main task.

is a .......... alsmost everybody have such thing if working for some. So if it has nothing to do with your working for company and their clients , but often it has. Then you are in a risky position if non clear agreements are made. ( with that even if you are author/inventor , it could be hard to use / sell... to competatitors / clients in same sector and co )

Beware. A lot of tech companies include a caveat in their employee handbooks nowadays claiming rights to any software that you develop while employed.

This link actually explains about work you explicitly do for an employer, not in your own spare time.
