Hello!

I am trying to have a subdomain point to an IP that is in no way attached to my server so that I can use it as a ventrilo hostname.

I have done some googling and some searching of this forum, and the answer appears to be to use an A record to point to the IP; however, I am having some trouble as it is not working.

If some one could clarify, it would be great.

So far, I have tried these things:

Attempt 1:
Create the subdomain "vent" via DA's subdomain tool. From there, edit the DNS of the created A records "www.vent" and "vent" to point to the ventrilo IP (70.72.xx.xx).

Attempt 2:
Do not create a subdomain using DA's subdomain tool. Instead, manually create a single A record called "vent" and point it to the ip (70.72.xx.xx).

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thank you.

It will work yes. when you make Attempt 2 will vent.domain.com answer the IP address you have entered in the A -record

Thank you for the reply.

I am not sure what you mean by "will vent.domain.com answer the IP".

Using attempt 2, when I put 123.45.67.89 (<- made up IP) as the IP in the A record of vent.mydomain.com of this page http://mydomain.com:2222/CMD_DNS_ADMIN?domain=mydomain.com
.

Nothing seems to happen. If I enter vent.mydomain.com as my hostname when trying to connect to ventrilo, I get an error that it is unable to resolve. If I type vent.mydomain.com into my browser, I get nothing as well.

I hope that answers your question. Thank you.

Of course, when you create an A record you need to reset / Reload Named if you are admin, if not then wait several hours so it will respond.

Under DNS management enter the A-record just vent without a domain, and IP address in the IP field

Perfect! Thank you for the help. I had no idea it had to be reloaded.

Thanks again.
