Current options for "append" are somewhat limited. Providing an option for the unix timestamp would allow easy tracking of backups by the hour, quarter hour, or whatever. An alternative would perhaps be a shell expression to generate some arbitrary string (sanitized of course).

My own thing. Custom crons that compress files & DB and then rsync them an hour later.
