I would like to do a Admin backup/transfer to a remote ftp (my home system). Unfortunately I haven't a fixed ip, can i try to use a dynamic dns system to do this job?
Thanks in advance.

You can try it. It will work if your IP# doesn't change too often. Another way to do it is to save it to your server, and then do an scp from your local system to get the file from the server. This is easiest to do if you're running Linux, Unix or Mac-OS on your local system, but I believe you can automate scp from Windows as well.

Most isps will sell you a static ip for $5 more per month or else use a dynamic dns host.

Then they're ripping you off. IP#s cost less than 50cents/year from Arin.

I've had my share of possible upstreams quote me good pricing on everything else and then want to charge me an extra us$1280/month on a class C allocation. When I point out to them the error of their thinking, they're happy to lower it to us$256 per month ($1/ip/month).

I've always gone elsewhere. I understand that may not be possible for a small user with a home or small business connection, but you should at least know the pricing dynamics.

And for what it's worth AT&T, on their DSL lines, don't even offer static-IP anymore, not even for business accounts. They'll over permanent lease IP#s provisioned over DHCP, but that would generally require you have a router (which allows passthrough of IP#s without NAT) which you might not otherwise need.
