administrator FTP access denied

Hello everyone,

I'm running 3 DA webserver, 2 normal servers and 1 VPS. On both normal servers I'm able to connect via FTP as an administrator, nothing strange. When I try to connect on the VPS, I get an access denied. Even when I create a new server admin, access denied. The strange thing is, when I create a reseller or user, they do have access via ftp.

What could be wrong?

regards,
Rob

Do you have a domain added to the admin account?
Because if admin does not have a domain name (you can see that in the user section of the admin account), there is nothing to access with FTP, so no ftp access.

I think it's not true. Because when you installed DA you be able to give any domain name and make admin user. Also you could connected to FTP via IP,

- Check your Settings in Services|FTP
- Diagnostics|Log , download the log for FTP and attach

Be sure to you have the right permissions on your folders/admin user.

check the following links, I hope it helped you.

FTP accounts in DirectAdmin

How to create a user and give him access to the /home/admin/domains/ directory?

Of course most of us would believe that the admin user should never be accessed by ftp, or by any other insecure protocol (not even http), as the admin password is just too powerful to risk in open transit over the Internet.

Thats not exactly correct. You dont need a domain under the admin account to get FTP working for admin. This is a bug, still not fixed? I recently installed a new Centos 6 installation and i had the same exact issue. The admins password is not added to the proftpd.passwd file upon DA install. There is a fix for it in the knowledgebase section but it took me hours to find it.

Thanks guys.
It is as simple as Richard said. I just added a domain to a extra admin account and volila, I can acces through FTP.
The solution Pucky mentioned wasn't tested by me but I will do so when I have another webserver installed.

Thanks to everyone for your input. :o
