Another problem with some hardware RAID solutions is that building/rebuilding has to be done before booting. That equals to a lot of downtime.
 
Really? I've never heard of that. It certainly shouldn't be required. You should be able to shut down the server, replace the drive, and restart the server. And you can with every true hardware RAID I've ever tried.

And if you've got true hardware RAID and hot-swap carriers you shouldn't even have to shut down your system.

Maybe it was just to build the array. This is what I was told when I switched from single drive to RAID 1 (on FreeBSD).
 
Linux software RAID builds arrays and continues to run in degraded mode while doing so. Windows NT and above does as well.

Every hardware RAID solution I've ever seen does as well.

I know nothing about BSD-raid; perhaps someone else can write of their experience.
