Bandwith Shows 300 GB Difference!!

Hello,

I have one of my servers which are hosted on valueweb..

Now I have a switch bandwidth controller on that server which records all outbound traffic (dont really know about inbound)..

Now, on that control panel its showing that I am using 200 GB bandwidth when on directadmin, its showing 500 GB!!

Thats 300 GB difference, which panel should I follow and why that much difference?

DirectAdmin could be monitoring more traffic generated by services used by that user. For example, ftp.

True, but billing wise I am allowed a certain bandwidth a month, and since they are recording it low, they have no other way of finding out..

As a matter of fact when I asked them, they said the billing goes by what the switch says.. So I guess I am safe and just have to follow what they say..:D

Most data centers track and bill only on outgoing because it generally exceeds incoming by 10:1 or better.

You should ask them to be sure, though.

800G/month is approximately 2mbps.

If they bill on what they count, then they can't bill you for more than they count.

I'm dealing with the same problem, but in my case, its just the other way. They're meters show about 100 gb's more than directadmin.
 
I also see it the other way, I put it down to DA not able to measure overheads and the odd thing slipping through, DA relies on log files to measure usage and not every single thing can be logged.
 
Look at it this way..

Directadmin does not have the power (no panel does) to know what you download and upload via ssh...

Also main switches only measure ONE way traffic (e.g. all downloads), switches do not count uploads and what not...

In the case that directadmin is less, it sounds suspicous, maybe the count is fake or something..

not sure what switches you reffering to but every isp I use measures both inbound and outbound traffic on the switch.

As you can see the domains consumed a bandwith of 69 MBytes where are the remaining 34000???

Shouldnt he have 3751.3 bandwidth used too?
 
DA generally measures the amount of data moved. While we (and DA) call it bandwidth it really isn't. It's transit; the amount of bytes transferred in a time period.

Most providers measure actual bandwidth; the speed at which the data moves.

The two are not the same.

the rest is the bandwith used by the mail, isn't it ?

waiting that DA correct the mistake in stats.
 
I have never had the bandwidth a control panel running on a server says I used the amount the DC says I used match. It just is not going to happen.

The DC counts every inbound and outbound packet the control panel does not. So watch the bandwidth stats your DC provides to know if you are going to go over quota and buy more bandwidth before you do. It is much cheaper that way usually.
 
I'm after the same issue really as my DA bandwidth shows nowhere near what I have used this month....

Apparently, I've had 400+Gb [outgoing] transfered this month through the lan connection [down to direct linking of files, huge leeching, etc - all of that i've capped and is generally much much much better :D] but DA reports the usage at:

Bandwidth (meg) 1577.4

Obviously, we all know the bit / byte differences but thats a severe difference...

Is there any reason why it would not count the usage? I know its not mail though, as not much is sent outgoing [plenty of spam though on some accounts hehe].

Any thoughts would be helpful as if direct file downloading doesnt get logged, its going to be fun having to use other methods to determine bandwidth usage.

Did i say Fun?.... i meant Hell i think hehe ;)
