Blackberry push

Silly question, might not be understanding fully, but how do providers yahoo/gmail have instant blackberry push enabled?

Is this something i can do mailserver end using directadmin?

Gmail use their own specific application for the blackberry (not really push):

I use mail checking on my phone at 15 min intervals (polling) wich I think is enough (IMAP). Could be lowered, but it just eats up battery.
