Brute force attacks: living a nightmare in InterServer.

I don't know how to put this, but for the entire month I've been experiencing terrible slowdowns in my server. At first I thought it was some wordpress plugins, until one day I noticed it was a massive amount of Brute Force attacks that were slowing down the server. I've enabled all the default security features that comes with Direct Admin, not only it didn't solve the issue to the slightest, but it also blocked my own IP. After getting the IP unblocked, there it goes: can barely browse the site. Pages still taking forever to load. I was already using Openlitespeed+lsphp, but even so, it didn't fix a thing. Now InterServer keeps telling me to enable Cloud Flare. Damn it, how come all the security measures that comes with Direct Admin aren't even able to solve at least half the problem, now I have to use a free proxy?
I started with their 1 slice VPS for testing, and I can't even browse rebranded site that has like 6 visitors a day (according to Google Analytic).
I'm serious considering moving to a shared hosting, but I fear I might regret that, because my server is pretty fast in the intervals where the attackers are not making a mess. During the attacks, the serve load average is pretty damn high.

The exploiters are trying to invade my entire website, in the logs I can even see listed an email account that doesn't even exist anymore and that I never used with interserver (what makes me suspicious of how the attackers got that mail account in the first place). Is this my fault or InterServer's fault? Should I move to another server?

So what is the Specs of the server, and the OS.
Are you the Admin aka root. OR is it a "managed" server?

Just because the firewall is running doesn't mean it setup correctly? Did you configure it all or just Install the software?

Lets start there.

This is a common everyday occurrence on the WWW. Everyone gets BFed everyday all day. It is are you blocking them or not.

If you had ever been hacked before anywhere it's out there.. Like writing on the boys bathroom wall...

Did interserver say you have been hacked or you dont know. I can't tell from you post if you are just getting attacked or you know you got hacked.

If you are just getting attacked then there is hope.
 
And if its a DDOS then only the data center will be able to help you. By the time the traffic gets to your server its too late.
 
Hi, thx for the help. I haven't been hacked, and this site had the content migrated from Joomla to Wordpress, it never had any hacking issue,
although I can see they are trying to, as they're touching things like the login page. I'm just having a server overload, can barely use the website. Yes I have root access, it's a self managed VPS. As for the security, I'm in the ConfigServer Security & Firewall page, everything is already enabled, except for the payed features, what should I do here now?
Even my Direct Admin control panel got slow. Sometimes I wait up to 2 minutes to load a page.

New server, the host company installed it. This is my first VPS, for years I used shared hosting. I didn't even get something robust, I just signed up for this plan because I wanted something a bit faster than what I already had, and the price different is only $1+.
 
By the way, I've already settle Brute Force limit in wordfence security, will it conflict with the direct admin configuration? Also, what 86400 stands for? milliseconds?
 
Oh great, now I can't even log in the control panel. It's saying the login data is incorrect. Looks like someone managed to hack the Direct Admin.
 
I wouldn't say that easy that someone managed to hack your account in your Panel, sometimes services are getting hanged because of high server load.
You should try a restart and access through SSH or ask for support from your host if it's a managed server.
 
Wordpress..... Need I say more!

Have you installed MalDet? (can be difficult on a VPS/etc if you want live monitoring)
 
If you can login or with backup and restore then disable that ... user / resell account as fast as possible and set limits for that one to almost zero!
Also the mailaccounts !

If it is DA with only 1 user in License then ask your hoster or DA for support and extra user if possible.

After that ofcourse with al new secure pass and certs, you can go to try clean and setup....

Some times if we see load rising they are trying to do sql injections in CMS systems, automated so then try blocking ip's as fast as possible could help, they go on to other victims .
If manually and you are in focus of someone trying to damage you or sites / persons on server it is hard, and you need a good ddos service and maybe much more.

That’s not the server. You have to protect the entire server. You are the server admin now.

Shared is maintained by the hosting company. So they protect it and watch it. It’s managed by people that know how. Sure you share that server with others.

vps is moving to your own server. Sure it has more freedom and power. Your sharing here to on a smaller scale. However you are now the owner and captain. Because it’s unmanaged that’s why it’s cheaper only a dollar more. Go look at a managed price for the same thing. You have to learn more than how to install plugins and type posts. Now you have to hire someone or learn server management.

I thank you for all the help, but that last advice was kinda unnecessary. Please don't talk to me as if you could just judge me based on what I said about this being my first VPS. You haven't been through all I've been with this company.
I'm well aware that I manage this thing, but I'm also aware that it's not like I have absolutely full access, since I can't even change the root username, and every time something awful happens, they're the only ones that can solve it, even if I restart the server from my account.
Also, self managed doesn't mean they should just throw the entire thing unprotected and not give a damn about their costumers when they need urgent help. If you rent a house for someone, you don't leave the person without doors and windows on the house, telling them to just use their own doors and windows to prevent strangers from invading the house, just because they're the only ones living there.
I had a problem so serious yesterday that even as root I still couldn't login. Another thing, with all the security measures I've taken so far, also with the changes they've made, including using litespeed, it should have had solved at least 20% of the problem, but now it's twice worse. I'll just get self-managed VPS in another hosting company with a better support, Interserver is not a good company on average also. I've seen companies with better ratings on HostAdvice, charging way more than just $6 a month for self-managed VPS. So judging by what I've read, and from self-experience, I can only conclude they're taking advantage on newcomers.

Always (almost) in the very very small text you can then read about some as fair use policies, we have one site at such hoster, and yes they did throw out custommers who are (to) heavy users without any warning hihi. ;)

I think myself a VPS (self managed REAL full SSD, with a DA panel license, backup, reversip..., snapshot and some more as little support options) with all needed things should be about starting price round 30-45 euro per month excl taxes, that is then the light one.


You can have some cheaper then with unlimited, but they have then in the contract if you are heavy user they throttle bandwith port to 100 M

You didn't rent a house. You only bought the land. When you buy a VPS all you are paying for is the the VM = all this equals is a blank computer. They asked you which OS you wanted and maybe if you wanted a panel of some kind. They did that as a gesture for you as a customer. You didnt rent a house. If you think you did you know now. Unless you are paying for managed service you are on your own. Yes some companies help more than others, in general unmanaged = you do it all. Think anything else is folly

Not sure did you full read the TOS? As a user you have obligations as well.

No one on this forum is here to offend or hurt you. We want to help you. If you feel I have "judged" in some wrong way. Has you hosting company had a long a meaning full dialog with you like this?

You have a few choices to make.
Find a new host.
Learn to be a admin or not.

Either way we will be here to help you..

Yep overselling... it is very popular in LARGE companies. Even the cel phone companies do it Unlimited Data...HAHAHA Only thing unlimited is the Love of Jesus Christ..
