I do believe; however, that there is a limit to the length of a username in DirectAdmin. I think it is something like 10 characters. You should also enter your username in all lower-case letters. DirectAdmin might convert it to be that way, but I'm not sure.
I checked out their Web site. That is who you will need to contact. Chances are, since it is free, you do not have SSH or root access. So they will need to change your username for you.
