Can I keep DirectAdmin up to date on a spare VM that has an expired license?

I've used nothing but virtual machines for the past 4 1/2 years. I want to do updates on VMs that are not active so there are no service interruptions, then switch the active and inactive VMs and their IP addresses, and then refresh the license on the newly activated VM. That would mean while the spare is being updated, it would use an IP that is not registered with DA. I wouldn't need access the control panel on the spare VM, but I would want to be able to update DA and its related software. Will that work?

Another thing that would be very useful is to be able to bring a VM up under a different IP to do backups and restores.

Thanks!

You should try it and see what happens.

Check this forum and the DirectAdmin KnowledgeBase. You can do it from the command line if it doesn't reqire the DirectAdmin service to be running (I'm not sure if backups require DirectAdmin be running or not).

Hello,

That's for sure. It's possible to keep the related software updated to the latest releases. But you'll need have directadmin disabled as you won't be able to run it with an expired license. And you will probably need to disable directadmin cron tasks, to make dataskq no to try to startup directadmin. And for sure, you won't be able to update directadmin versions without valid license.

PERFECT! The risk, down time, and compatibility surprises stem from the update of the web components. It's great for the instances when I can switch in an upgraded VM or when I upgrade a live server. It gives me an opportunity to upgrade in a test environment to determine if and where the problems are, and have the solutions worked out before going live. That means no interruptions or panic. That's HUGE!

Not being able to update DirectAdmin itself until the VM goes live is a minor inconvenience. Very seldom does anything go wrong during a DirectAdmin update, and if it would, the only likely effect would be not being able to use the control panel or some feature in it. It would also be unlikely that the normal operation of web services would be affected while implementing any remedies that might be required.

Thanks!
