Cannot run spamassassin - exited or timed out error starting spamd

I have tried to install spamd, first with the info at http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=36 and then with info provided at http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42171&highlight=can't+install+spamassassin.

I still encounter the same problem. No errors were encountered during install, but when I try to start spamd I get the following error:

child process [5834] exited or timed out without signaling production of a PID f
ile: exit 255 at /usr/bin/spamd line 2642.

I can find nothing on this forum to tell me what the problem may be. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Are there any errors in /var/log/mail.info /var/log/mail.err or /var/log/maillog
