My domain disc space is full and I have tried to clear it by deleting a little used ftp account. The account has disappeared but the disc space has not cleared. I need to either recover the account to be able to delete files from it or clear the disc space but I can't find any reference in the help files.

Where did you delete your FTP account? If you did delete FTP account (login and password) from page in Directadmin (http://hostname.com:2222/CMD_FTP?DOMAIN=domain.com)... it would not free any space for you.
You delete files instead, use file manager in Directadmin or FTP access. Default FTP account can not be deleted from within directadmin web-interface.

Or find "Total Disk Usage (MB)" and click "Update" on User (account/domain) Stats page.
