CNAME problems

Hello. I bought a web account with a free domain fotografia.idl.pl - and then I bought domain fotopolska.info. I am trying to make galeria.fotopolska.info point to galeria.fotografia.idl.pl , but in such way, that in the address bar fotopolska.info will be still visible.

I tried to do this by adding this in DNS management for domain fotopolska.info :

galeria CNAME galeria.fotografia.idl.pl.

but it didn't work.


Moreover, using of cname confuses me. I conducted little experiment to learn how does this work and added:

gmail CNAME gmail.com. - instant effect, but redirection only (from gmail.fotopolska.info to gmail.com login page). It still exists c.a 1 hour after I deleted this.

onet CNAME onet.pl. - instant effect, but entering onet.fotopolska.info gives messaage that operation not permitted (by onet.pl I guess ?)

wp CNAME wp.pl. - instant effect, full success (wp.pl displayed with wp.fotopolska.info in address bar)

test CNAME gmail.com. - no effect, address not found... ??
galeria CNAME galeria.fotografia.idl.pl. - same as above

Confused, I also tried to add (for fotografia.idl.pl this time)

gmail CNAME gmail.com. - and... no effect with gmail.fotografia.idl.pl, address not foud.. ??


Could someone explain why the same configuration is working one time and other not ?

(At the time I am writing this my website seems to be down)

The response you're getting: Apache is functioning normally indicates that your CNAME record IS pointing the URL to the correct server. However this will only work if you've set up an alias in your control panel. If you can't set up an alias in your control panel, then you need to discuss this with your provider.

Are You talking about aliases that can be set up in DNS section of the DA ?
If yes, for which domain should I set up alias (if I set up CNAME in DNS section for domain "fotopolska.info, an alias should be set up for the same domain, or the second, fotografia.idl.pl ? If for the domain fotografia.idl.pl, there are all aliases - for fotografia.idl.pl., for galeria and www.galeria (created automatically with domain galeria.).

I created also alias for galeria.fotografia.idl.pl. for domain fotopolska.info (along with galeria CNAME galeria.fotografia.idl.pl.), but it is not working now. Does it need some time or I did something wrong ?

Whether you use CNAME or A records is up to you; it generally doesn't matter to DNS except that if you've got a CNAME record for a fqdn, then any other records for the same fqdn will be ignored.

The place to set up the alias is in Domain Pointers from the domain login in DirectAdmin.

While galeria.fotografia.idl.pl and fotopolska.info point to the same IP# (which is all a CNAME record does) they appear to point to different sites.

I am affraid I don't understand - With alias created in "domain pointers" I didn't even need to play with cname, only alias made things work - but I can set up this type of redirection only for main domain, and not the subdomain... So I could made galeria.fotopolska.info to be an alias of fotografia.idl.pl (without using of cname), but I can't make this for galeria.fotografia.idl.pl
