I had inadvertantly deleted a reseller name (mine) not thinking it would have an impact on the user accounts tha were setup under it.

Now logging in as admin and then then going to "show all users" I see that the clients are still there BUT I cannot access them, and there websites are gone, no one can get to them.

So I logged in as root and check the /home directory and there directories are also gone.

Please someone tell me there is a way to recover

If I did, I wouldnt be asking for help.

thanks for the thought though

If you have no backups and the files are gone from the home directory then you have lost them and will have to re-add them.

Show all users is probably inaccurate and hasnt updated yet. You would have to update it by running:

Code:
echo "action=cache&value=showallusers" >> /usr/local/directadmin/data/task.queue
/usr/local/directadmin/dataskq d

Chatwizard is right, without any backups you're going to have to readd the users and recreate their files. It is a good idea to always create backups at least once or twice a week, if not once a day. Sorry we can't be more help, but I don't know what else to tell you. :(

well thanks gang, lesson learned lol. Got to say, lessons due stick when there hard.

Anyway, thanks again

Suggestion for future development and security

Suggestion:

1. It may be a great idea to place a SECOND SPECIAL warning and agreement check box on a user delete command that is flagged IF the user is of "RESELLER" status saying "this will remove ALL clients created for this RESELLER if deleted" and you may not be just deleting one user or was it here and I missed it lol. This would definitely save some hard times and heartaches in the future.

2. Also, backups even if created with that user account should also be maintained or archived if the deleted user was of reseller status.

take care

The worst part of this backup system is it overwrites yesterdays files, so if you need something you better make sure you scramble to save your backup files before the next run. Never seen a backup system like this before. No thought into this has been entertained. Placing backups into the user_backups folder without any type of archiving scheme is ridiculous.

There should be, daily, weekly, monthly directories maintained or whatever option the admins wishes to keep configurable from the control panel.

All daily files should be copies to weekly and monthly when the situation arises and they should only override files when the time to replace them has arrived, and no sooner.

When necessary, the admin should be able to select the appropriate folder and restore any user from any folder at anytime from the control panel. This is an INDUSTRY STANDARD and exists in every control panel.

Possible Save from system tar?

Turns out that I had created an entire system tar file a couple months back

Q: what files/directories would I need to recover to get the client domains back to that point?

Thanks

Pucky,

While it's not the most ideal solution, you can already create multiple backups by following the guide at http://help.directadmin.com/item.php?id=146. I agree that some changes should be made to the backup system to handle your suggestions, but this should help you out until, and if, DirectAdmin decides to change it's backup strategy. Hope this helps.

getting sidetracked here, please help

Sorry to intrude in my thread lol, but I had posted another question on this thread I started for help for a specific need but log in to find the we took a right turn again; althought related and good information, here is what I need one more time.

It turns out that I had created an entire system tar file a couple months back

Q: what files/directories would I need to recover to get the client domains back to that point?

My main concern is recovering my users acct's. I do know about the /home directory but I more specifically what has to be recovered for the DA accnt info for this client

Thanks guys

I know what you're asking, but it's not easy to answer without actually logging on to a working server and doing some research; DirectAdmin saves things in a lot of places.

Perhaps someone who's done this recently will post and help you. Otherwise you may want to hire an administrator to work on the restore for you.
