DirectAdmin "lifetime" license expires after roughly a year

After about a year our DirectAdmin "lifetime" license expired.

DirectAdmin says the license has not expired, but that their logs indicate that our server is no longer using the main server IP on record when validating the DirectAdmin license.

SSHing in to the main CentOS 6.3 server IP of record and running "/sbin/ifconfig" confirms that eth0 is in fact set to the main server IP of record.

A check of /usr/local/directadmin/conf/directadmin.conf shows "ethernet_dev=eth0"

Yet for some reason DirectAdmin is using eth0:4 when calling home to verify our license. The verification fails because the communication is not from the registered eth0 main server IP on record.

We've been without a control panel for three days and DirectAdmin's support has been positively glacial. Replies take a frustrating 24 hours.

Do you have any idea about what might be causing DirectAdmin to elect to use eth0:4 instead of eth0 when calling home to validate our license?

Regards.

Hello,

I don't know why DA use the wrong interface to make the license check... But you can still solve the problem temporally by changing the IP in you license in the DA customer panel....

Yeah, Philippe, it's a Band-Aid at best. But you are also right to imply that it's better than annoying users by not having a control panel.

I'm not familiar with the DA customer panel. It's surprising that the customer can change the licensed IP at will. Where is the DA customer panel?

Perhaps the customer can make changes to leased licenses using the client area. As far as I can tell, the client area does *not* permit owner IP address changes for "lifetime" licenses.

I fear it is up to the authorities at DA to make "ownership" changes. I fervently wish they regarded a non-working "lifetime" license with the same urgency as the purchaser.

dueling screen captures...

you can change you license IP from the DA client area... I just take a look and it's possible.,

No doubt you are correct when it comes to a DirectAdmin leased license. The "lifetime" licenses, however, seem to be handled differently:

As for DA's slow responses, they seem to be speeding up now. It could be that there was a backlog of queries from the weekend.

Hi,

well I don't know why you can't because I also got the same type of licenses at 299$ for my own use and I still can change the ip...

Happy to ear that DA have responded to you...

Different customer control panels are a puzzle

That's odd. We've had that license for at least a year.

Well, the matter of the errant DirectAdmin customer panel will get addressed once the immediate problem of the errant license has been solved.

Thanks for taking the time to share your screen capture, it may have revealed a clue to a broader problem. It's a win-win deal because we users benefit from a more robust control panel system and DA is spared damage to their reputation as well as the reoccurring cost for avoidable technical support.

I'm with you on that, Eureka.

Not being able to move a control panel license is nasty when a dedicated server crashes and one has to scramble to rebuild on new hardware. Often that new hardware is already provisioned with a different block of IP addresses.

Restarting DirectAdmin solves problem

Did you hear that forehead slap?

It turns out that after reloading a license one needs to restart DirectAdmin. SSH in and thumb in:

/etc/init.d/directadmin restart

That's all it took. Presumably a server reboot would have done the trick too.

Thanks all for your words of wisdom!
