Hi everyone,
I've read through some of hte HowTo's and the posts here and have seen much discussion on the secondary DNS. But for some reason I can't find the answer to my question. Here what I have:

1 DA Server with two IP Addresses (Acting as the primary and secondary name server)

What I want:

Have my DA server be the primary server, then have the secondary be a free service (pick one, doesn't matter).

I need something to protect my sites should the primary server go down. I've looked at master2slave but it seems to require that I have a certain amount of access to the secondary, which I typically do not.

Any advice on how to use a free secondary DNS provider in a dynamic way, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

That would be up to the company you're getting the slave DNS from (the term was changed from secondary to [/i]slave[/i] some years ago).

BIND offers NO established method for getting the names of the domains to slave from one server to another, so eveyone does it differently.

How many domans do you want to slave? We're not a free service, but we're not expensive.

And we work with master2slave, since we wrote it :) .

Any other ideas? I'm looking for a free solution (or at least something that's based on bulk pricing).

Thanks

Since both DNS servers should be live the entire time both servers will receive the query's -- the fastest one will respond. They both consume power and bandwith and services to keep them running.

To make a long story short -- there is no such thing as free in professional services.

If you find a fairly cheap provider -- go for it.

Not exactly what I was looking for, forget the free service, but assuming I don't have access to the slave/secondary to make any modifications, what changes do I need to make on the DA to tell it to use whatever slave provider I choose?

Try to work with someone who has a DA system too. You can use the multiserver setup to replicate DNS.

I do exactly the same with a friend.

Sounds like a good idea, anyone with a DA system willing to "trade"?

Just PM me!

did you try xname.org ?
100% free
master, slave or both.
Did you read that website address you posted? What they call commercial usage is acceptable for small companies, but then they require a mandatory donation.

We should never abuse companies willing to offer us services at no charge; if we do they'll soon either ban us, or shut down because they can't absorb all the charges they're incurring.

Jeff

I never had problem with them.
Now i have dns cluster and need them no more.
I never paid something.
Is it a problem to make a donation ?

I didn't say it was a problem. I've never used them and I don't know.

I merely pointed out that they require a donation if their solution is used commercially, so it doesn't qualify as free.

Just for your info... on thier main page :)

Commerial Usage
A commercial usage of XName service is possible for small companies. A financial contribution is then mandatory to avoid beeing considered as abusers.

The problem with this way is that you need ADMIN access to the second DA server in order to replicate the zone files. This does not work at the reseller level.

For anyone to trust you with admin access to thier box you would have to be close friends.

Why not simple rent a virtual server (cheaply), install DA and slave for yourself, I believe there are virtual servers that come with DA already installed.
